Når bystyret i Tromsø trakk søknaden om innlemmelse i Samisk språkområde, mistet vi en viktig mulighet til å befeste et viktig kulturelt lag i våre offentlige rom; til å tilføre en kompleksitet som skaper møter mellom mennesker og fortellinger. Tromsø gikk glipp av muligheten å formidle at byen anerkjenner at den er et sted hvor to verdener møtes.

Nye visuelle språk og ideer oppstår i kampsonene. I høst har vi sett New York gallerier plukke opp Occupy Wall Streets «scruffy cardboard signs» og 15-M bevegelsens visuelle språk bli brukt i Vodafones mobilabonnementskampanje. Vi har sett vrengte kofter. Protestaksjoner er en del av vår kulturelle produksjon og blir etter hvert plukket opp av reklamebransjen, mote, film og kunst.

Tromsø kan ikke kreve av de samiske miljøene at de alltid skal måtte hente den kreative energien i kampen for rettigheter og synlighet - en synlighet som Norge og Tromsø markedsfører for alt den er verdt.

Arctic Frontiers 2012 / Tromsø
The conference asks if and how industrial practices and global economic practices are able to develop in a close and sustainable connection to local landscape conditions. It also asks how architectural practices can identify and create awareness of landscape spaces that are not immediately visual. It seeks to demonstrate the significance of architectural logics, explorations and concepts for social development.
The conference will work explore new vocabularies, tools and methods for a sustainable development of the complex set of practices operating within the same territories.

On our way to lecture on "Appearing and Disappearing Landscapes" in Valencia, we are "hijacked" to give a lecture at ETSAM in Madrid. The title of this lecture is a light reference to Eduardo Bru’s book "Coming from the South". We read this book at the Europan Forum in Cordoba some years ago, and it informed us then.
We will elaborate on some of our findings seeing our projects as touchstones in the Nordic landscape. At the Europan Forum in Oslo KED was involved in series of discussions on the tensions in Spain, Portugal et al.So being present in Spain today must be quite an experience. Belinda Tato and Ecosistema Urbano from Madrid are now in Hamar working for two months, in direct dialogue with the people in Hamar, with the project Dream Hamar. We find this Spanish/Norwegian interchange really enlightening. Angel Borrego Cubero, professor at ETSAM, was interviewed by Bryan Farrel in May under the title "The beauty and vision of Spain’s "revolution". Here he talks about the role of young architects in the new Spanish realities.
We really look forward to our Spanish journey.

Knut Eirik, President of Europan Norway, is on his way to EUROPAN FORUM in Oslo this weekend, The Forum of Cities and Juries brings together the 17 Europan national structures, members of the 14 juries, and representatives of the 49 sites involved in Europan 11. The Forum of Cities and Juries is structured as a series of debates, working groups, architectural excursions and social gatherings to discuss solutions and focus adjudication of the entries that have been short-listed by national juries. New in the Europan Forum context is the public and academic program constructing The Europan Week in Oslo.

Kjerstin is going to Harstad to participate in the jury for the Open Idea Competition on sustainable urban development. The exhibition of entries opens tomorrow at 6 pm in Harstad.

Nunarsuup qeqqani - Nuup qeqqani won the best Nordic urban plan award at the Nordic architecture festival – Arkitekturmässan, in Gothenburg.

”The jury commended the clear and strong narrative that resulted from an intense research and exchange with the local community. The plan comprises a contemporary approach to landscape and cultural issues. This is a convincing project that pushes the boundaries between many disciplines and is not afraid to touch on the hard social ambiguities and the adverse local conditions. It subtly deals with different typologies and introduces urban qualities by creating diversity and a balanced density.”

Welcome to the first conversation event in Herreros Arquitectos exhibition project, The Banquet: The Conversation on art + architecture! Thursday September 8th at 19:00 to 21:00 at ROM for kunst og arkitektur in Oslo.

Defining, designing, building and activating spaces are the creative base for architecture. Ultimately these are also concerns which affect contemporary art practices in general. The method of research in the physical environment and in the human nature and psychology is another. Art and Architecture from their different positions, base their work upon the understanding of the society and cultural codes for delivering concepts and new ideas.

We acknowledge the independency and eligibility of each profession but also question: Are art and architecture just two parallel lines? If not, how and where do they meet? Are there crossing points? Is there something more than gravity fields, a mutual attraction that forms common environments for understanding, describing and transforming the world? Do they fuel, intensify or fertilize each other? Or is it just the sharing of clients and concepts that is inspiring them to collaborate on mutual interests? Is there an art + architecture? Conceptually or even physically?

I dag, 5. mai åpner utstillingen RECAST - scener fra Jæren på KINO KINO i Sandnes.

Utstillingen tar opp arkitekturens rolle i forhold til endrede forutsetninger og utfordringer som nord Jæren regionen står overfor når oljealderen går mot slutten. I de siste 40 år har oljeindustrien vært en avgjørende drivkraft i forbindelse med den omfattende utviklingen som har funnet sted. Stavanger, som Norges oljehovedstad, har gjennomgått et stort framskritt fra å være en av Norges fattigste byer til å bli en av de rikeste.

Et tilbakevendende spørsmål er hva som vil skje med videreutviklingen av byregionen når oljeressursene i Nordsjøen ikke lenger er drivkraft i den lokale økonomien.

Utstillingen er laget i samarbeid med Stavanger Arkitektforening og ARKITEKTURENS ÅR. Det er et av 3 lokale prosjekter som markerer SAF’s 75 års jubileum. AHOs master studio "Appearing and Disappearing Landscapes" (våren 2010) og Snøhettas Sandnesprosjekt presenteres i denne utstillingen. More to come.

We are on our way to Nuuk and Greenland.Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, Sermersooq Municipality has in collaboration with Kalaallit Nunaanni Namminersorlutik Oqartussat, The Government of Greenland prepared a comprehensive master plan for the Tuujuk and Block, P areas. The exhibition of the Master Plan proposal for parts of the City Centre of the Capital Nuuk, titled In The Middle of The World/In The Middle of Nuuk , opens on the 5th of April. Our guests and collaborators, Minna Riska from MDH architects , Johan Berglund from 42architects + regionalasscosiates and Anders Hus Folkedal from Aspan Viak Landscape travel with us. Håkon Matre from Fantastic Norway has to stay at home, with his newly born child. In Greenland we will team up with our partners in TNT Nuuk architects and all our connections and friends. The exhibition will be open at least until the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Arctic Council in Nuuk from the 10th to the !6th of May. A series of discussions will follow the exhibition: To exhibit is to open up! More to come on this sermersooq press release: For better or worse, the Tuujuk and Block P developments stand as symbols of a time of great social and cultural challenges. But the buildings are also valued for their central location and is home to people with resources. The ties between the residents and the energy that exists, is strong. After a lifetime of 40 years, block P with its 135 apartments and 50 residential dwellings is due for demolition, and Block A - L in Tuujuk with 156 apartments will be undergoing a phased demolition over a period of years. The problem surrounding the buildings is simple - as time has passed, the housing has become outdated. In the process of rebuilding the areas, a number of important questions must be asked: What qualities exists today and what new possibilities and qualities should we aim to produce? What kind of life and environments should we strive to generate? What type of town should it be? What role could the district play in Nuuk's overall development? In short: What kind of capital city should we aim for? To answer these questions, new experiences must be acquired and new knowledge learned and understood. Our existing thought Models need to be renewed. Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq has in collaboration with The Government of Greenland prepared a comprehensive master plan for the Tuujuk and Block, P areas. Through a discussion over one month between us and the director of The Bank of Greenland, Peter Petersen, some stunning dialogues has appeared. These dialogues is soon presented as a chronological skype/mail conversation. Hopefully also in english. What you find here, the Summer Laboratory with the young at heart, came up in these discussions as a theme connected to what is needed, what is important politics in relation to get the educated young people back to Greenland. And what kind of transformation in Nuuk can be related to this. Helena Lennert in TNT Nuuk headed this summer laboratory in a beatifull way.

This exhibition in Nuuk, in one of the apartments that in time to come may be demolished and recirculated, is part of our story bord for the evolution of the project that D&U and TNT Nuuk is in the middle of making. Our line of work involves series of discussions and conversations on many levels within the Nuuk society: "They shall see what we hear" is one of our postulates that charges our work. The newspaper text titled "Nuuks strangest neighbour" is a dialogue with the project leader from the town planning office, Jakob Bjerg Exner, about his interpretations of the public viewpoints amd their writings on the wall.

AHO WORKS AWARDS S2010

As part of AHO WORKS OUTLOOK Thursday June 10th, a number of awards was handed out to selected student projects from the Master Studios, in various categories. Our students at Appearing and Disappearing Landscapes got 2 of 8 awards for Architecture and Landscape.

The projects are nominated by the courses, whereas the winners are selected by a jury concisiting of external practicioners and representants of the sponsors.
The design jurors is Kaja Misvær from Designit and Jørgen Solstad of Kadabra, whereas the jury of architecture/landscape is Eli Goldstein and Patrick Lueth.
The winning projects will be displayed in AHOs Gallery 11-18. June 2010.

Kemppe (Mats K. Johansen) got the award for Excellence in transportation architecture (The Norwegian Public Roads Administration)

The notion "Stavanger and Jæren is the prisoner of the Norwegian economical Landscape" was invented by one of the students. This expression describes both the field of study in our master landscape studio and the character of exploitation of resources in the region. The footprint of oil economy has reached its peak and represent a disappearing landscape.
15 students from seven countries has during the semester developed a new cartography of this territory in transition, reformulated landscape structures and systems and tested this out through a specter of concepts. The studio has evolved through five themes encircling this field, exploring layers of information with the intention of charging the Jæren landscape and seascape with new energy. This thematic journey has created a comprehensive matrix of information on the appearing landscape, highly informed by another journey over 10 000 km creating 11 studios of conversation on our way through Jæren and Greenland, in the footprints of Eirik Raude. It is the sustainable urban territory of our time that is tentatively measured through this studio.

gjensyn med BYEN I MENNESKET

Arkitekturutstillingen Byen i mennesket ble arrangert på Kunstnernes Hus i 1968. Kuratorer var de unge arkitektene Per Kartvedt og Terje Moe, og arrangør var Oslo Arkitektforening. Med utstrakt bruk av multimedia, eksperimentelle installasjonsteknikker og besøk av den britiske nyavantgardegruppen Archigram, ble utstillingen en stor mediebegivenhet. Dagspressen trykket både forhåndsomtaler og intervjuer med utstillingens kuratorer og med Archigram, mens Arkitektnytt produserte den flotte katalogen. Utstillingen ble også en publikumssuksess. Men til tross for dette snudde pressedekningen idet utstillingen åpnet: Byen i mennesket ble utsatt for et massivt angrep fra kritikere og landets arkitekter, både i avisanmeldelser og gjennom leserbrev i Arkitektnytt. Budskapet var at utstillingen sviktet den folkeopplysningsagenda og profesjonspropaganda en arkitekturutstilling måtte ha. Deretter forsvant utstillingen ut av historien, og har ikke vært nevnt på over 40 år.

Arrangementet Gjensyn med Byen i Mennesket vil hente frem utstillingen fra glemselen, og forsøker å finne ut hvordan en så banebrytende utstilling kunne misoppfattes så sterkt i sin samtid, og hvorfor den kunne bli borte fra den norske arkitekturhistorien.

OAF arrangerer kveldsmøte tirsdag 11.5 kl 1900. Kveldens program består av et innledningsforedrag om utstillingens tilblivelse og etterspill av Martin Braathen, forfatter av den ferske boken Alt er arkitektur! Neoavantgarde og institusjonskritikk i Norge 1965-1970. I denne boken spiller Byen i mennesket en sentral rolle som en arkitekturhistorisk begivenhet.

Knut Eirik er en av Martins kilder og var ytterst tilstede i produksjonen av utstillingen.
Fra Kunstnernes hus, en sen natt i 68: Peter Cook til KED: "Are you one of the Sound Kings? Can you make our mobile work?" Utstillingen var stengt i tre dager, Stein Mehrens dikt "RØR" i Dagbladet var utløsende for gjennåpningen.

April and spring mark the termination of one cycle and the start of a new school year in Japan. During March, the graduation projects of architecture students from the Tohoku region were exhibited in the Sendai Mediatheque (by Toyo Ito). This was an incredible opportunity to view and possibly understand what notions architecture in Japan bases itself on: how do the students approach architecture, how is architecture even defined, in what directions do the professors push, how does the process unfold from a fragile idea into a material reality? I could not help to but to be touched by the minute level of the models, as expected. Some were almost like miniature puppet-houses. For instance, one could take out a book in a bookshelf in a model in 1:200. I was amazed by the scale of some projects, calling to mind less fortune directions of architectural history. Nevertheless, it was impressive how the most challenging shapes were worked in detail and made overall functioning spaces. On a superficial level I would say that there is a general "style" that outlines itself. The likes of SANAA, Sou Fujimoto, Junya Ishigami, Atelier Bow Wow or Tezuka come to mind in the spatial expressions, the shapes and materials. Still, the most inspiring and impressive feature, in my opinion, is the sensitive ambition that fuel these graduation works. It seems like the Japanese students are looking for a "new nature", in the words of Ryue Nishizawa. They are not afraid of searching for the ways in which contemporary life is defined and architecture by extension. They innovate. Coming from a French school this is an aspiration I have never been encouraged to pursue. Certainly, there are some doubtful points: the negation of the context, houses without roofs and walls that seem to defy all laws of gravity. However, is not a part of the architectural education to experiment and to question conventions? How else can we move towards an architecture more in sync with our time? This exhibition was a very pleasurable and inspiring experience. Unfortunately, due to copy right issues I cannot post any pictures that directly depict projects. Please enjoy the peek.

This image from my notebook was used in the discussion with you on storyboards. It is my storyboard for the 10 minutes lecture I gave for 11 departments at the NAL session om Architecture Now, just back from Greenland. As you can see, some of the other lecturers is written into my storyboard giving it new shape and form, they informed my lecture so to speak
It is the only two pages from my notebooks, that has been with me through all the studios we have set up through Jæren and Greenland, that is left in my position.
My computerbag with all technicalities and two completely filled notebooks where stolen from me in Oslo on Friday evening. As you know how much importance and confidence I place in the dialogue, and in the images that these dialogues create, can understand the complete loss I feel after this theft. Even the texts from the last dialogues with you is gone with the wind. But; Alice has made a beatifull poster, positioning this studios in two worlds we have been to and the notions and statements from them as stones in water with rings of knowledge, thouching each other, merging into each other. She has even blocks of texts from the studios. If I could ask for the moon: could each of you post on the blog a comment from one or two of the studios we set up in Jæren and Greenland and give your version of them, just some lines. That would be very good for me, and also for you I hope. A kind of rewriting of your and my learnings. Anything is very welcome - fex Gotfrieds five points from the IRIS studio, and Tarald Omas four columns of wisdom from the Ona Lighthouse studio. The heading "When you hear music its gone in the air" is from the Jazz musician Eric Dolphy. I am eagerly waiting for your small stories - thanks.

Erik Skare fra Tromsø er i Palestina og Libanon fra 15. februar til 21. mars. Her skal han dra rundt å intervjue palestinere om deres situasjon, ta bilder og dokumentere okkupasjonen av palestinsk jord i prakis. Bilder og tekst er tatt og skrevet av Erik som er vår gjesteblogger mens han er på reise.

Prolog: 22. februar 2009 går Benyamin Netanyahu og resten av den høyreekstreme rasistregjeringa ut og sier at Abrahammoskeen skal klassifiseres som jødisk kulturarv. Dette er en fortsettelse av tidligere politikk hvor viktige muslimske helligdommer er blitt stengt av for muslimer. Raseriet blant palestinerne i Hebron eksploderer og gatekamper bryter ut. Flere og flere snakker om en tredje intifada.

Nå: Jeg er i Hebron for å besøke en gammel venn, Hashem Al Azzeh. Han er utenbys og kommer ikke tilbake før om en times tid så jeg står på et tak til en gammel dame som viser meg hvordan byen er blitt omringet av vakttårn og check points i det vi hører et gedigent smell og røyk siver opp fra en annen del av byen.

5 minutter senere er jeg noe andpusten etter å ha sprunget hele veien der, og ser gata fyllt med israelske soldater som springer rundt. Jeg spør palestinerne som er der "sho fi? (hva har skjedd?)".
"Barna var på vei hjem da de israelske soldatene begynte å skyte på dem. 2 er drepte og flere skadet". Dette viser seg senere å være rykter, men flere vinduer er knust og bildører er gjennomhullet etter at geværene. Jeg beveger meg oppover gata for å finne ut mer da helvette bryter løs.

Flere barn har samlet seg i gata og kaster stein mot de israelske okkupantsoldatene. Svaret er hardt og kontant: de skyter med alt de har av kuler, tåregass og såkalte "flashbang"-granater. Jeg springer oppover og tar bilder, og havner midt i skuddlinja mens steiner flyr forbi meg fra den ene siden og tåregassgranater fra den andre. Igjen er jeg vitne til den urettferdige og håpløse kampen mellom små barn som kaster stein som ikke en gang rekker fram til målet, og soldatene som skyter mot det som kort kan betegnes som forsvarsløse barn.

Jeg prøver å ta bilde av barna, men de viser med klart kroppspråk at hvis jeg ikke skal ta bilde av ansiktene og peker på stenene. Frykten for å de nattlige raidene fra de israelske soldatene, og de påfølgende arrestasjonene er store. Flere barn har i løpet av de siste dagene, uten lov og dom, blitt arrestert. Flere menneskerettighetsgrupper har dokumentert tortur av palestinske barn og barna vet like godt som dem at det kan skje med dem også.

Soldatene presser guttene tilbake, og begynner og gå inn i husene. De får tak i en gutt på rundt 10 år, og mens de prøver å drege ham bort gråter han fortvilt mens foreldrene kjefter, roper og prøve å få ham løs. Til slutt slipper de israelske soldatene ham, men scenen som kommer opp er minst like tragisk. I sinne slenger faren gutten i bakken og banker ham brutalt opp med spark og harde slag mot kroppen. Gutten gråter konstant og hyler fortvilt.

Jeg snakker med Jean fra Christian Peacemaker Team som holder til i Hebron om det som skjer: "Akkurat nå ser bare de voksne på det som skjer, men barna føler et ansvar for framtiden. Det verste som kan bli gjort mot dem er å bli tatt fra dem gudshuset sitt. Det finnes ikke noe farligere enn det. Vi tror at han (Benyamin Netanyahu) prøver å fremprovosere et opprør, en intifada".
Jeg spør henne om hun tror det vil bli en tredje intifada: "Jeg håper ikke at det blir det. Jeg ber for at det ikke skal skje, for da kommer det til å bli mye verre enn nå. Og dette er historien. Under hvert opprør så er det barna som har stått for kampen".

Etterhvert roer kampene seg og etter å ha besøkt Hashem setter jeg meg på bussen hjem, med tårer som presser på. Sjåføren spør meg om hvor jeg kommer fra, og når han hører at jeg er fra Norge peker han på et bilde i vinduet av han og sønnen sin på 4 år og spør om jeg kan hjelpe han bort.

Det kan jeg ikke. For akkurat nå kan jeg ikke hjelpe noen. Aldri noensinne. Jeg tar fram favorittdiktet mitt fra lomma som pleier å trøste meg når det står på som verst:

at jeg velger utfordringen

WOODEN CARVED MAPS IN CYBERSPACE

Yesterday two of our friends tipt us simultaniously about a blogpost on BLDGBLOG about Inuit tactile maps of the Greenland coastline. Marianne Skjulhaug called from Bergen and Ross Langdon sent a mail from Uganda (!). Follow the link and learn more. It is truly intriguing.
The carving is 300 years old and shows the coastline with fjords, islands, nunataks and glaciers. The outline of the coast is carried up one side and down the other.
Later today, Aviaaja and Helena from tnt nuuk is coming to stay the week in Tromsø on our 3'rd workshop about Nuup Qeqqani. We are sure they can tell us more about these maps and maybee we can see them for ourselves the next time we go to Nuuk...

This is the title on the journalist Odd Pihlstrøms article in Stavanger Aftenblad Monday the 15th of February. Odd Pihlstrøm opened up and connected us to a series of voices in the Jæren agricultural Landscape. Four of this voices, and Odd Pihlstrøm, attended our debate studio set up at Ona Lighthouse (see the attached article) in a beautiful afternoon on the brim of the Atantic. An open and intense discussion took place for three hours, with the student eagerly participating – Oh What a Perfect Day.
On our three day journey in Jæren, brilliant organized by Alice Labadini, we set up five such studios in different places with impressive participation from cutting edge environments in Stavanger.

Nuuk pressroom

The local press in Nuuk is continuously following the Tuujuk an Blok P project (in the middle of the world/in the hearth of Nuuk) as it evolves through dialogues with the public, think tanks, city walks/Nuuk Safaris etc. The journalists are making their own contributions through interviews with people living in the area, interviews with politicians and so on. The newspapers are inviting to a series of chronicles on the topic "The appearing and disappearing Nuuk". The small editorial on top of this post, "Democracy commits", is quite stunning with its strengthening of the importance of direct, face to face, eye to eye dialogue between the politicians, the architects and the residents of all kind. And the editorial announces these new attitudes and methods as very appropriate and to the point for the larger debate on the future of Greenland, relating to aluminium melting plants, exploitation of Uran and mining concessions of all types. The point, the editorial states, is for the politicians to be very aware of what is said and to take it to their heart and mind. The language in these articles is Greenlandic and Danish. More English short versions are to follow.

NUUK CITY WALK

This Postcard is a starting point for an exploration of the Nuuk to come. The shivering line guided the followers of the Nuuk Safari. This site in the capital contains many aspects of Greenland colonial history, and is a political hot topic. The long line in the middle is Blok P, which at one point in history contained 1% of the Greenland population. The conversations on the Nuuk Safari unfolded all shades of this history. One social worker characterized Blok P as "an evil circle shaped as a building". The housing minister of the Self Government, who took part in the Safari, has stated that Blok P is to be demolished in 2011; it is a main political ambition. A series of proposals from different architects in the last 20 years has proposed solutions for revitalization of Blok P. None has come to life - and the standard is on a level of being derelict. A large part of the surrounding blocks and row houses is also in the searchlight of demolition - in time to come. So, this postcard, and the walking line, is empowered by memories, anger, hopelessness and possibly new hope. It’s an explosive postcard, now in the hands of the people of Nuuk.

Nuuk Safari 1 took place on a beautiful Saturday. Lots of people, including two ministers from the Self Government. The architect Helena Lennert from TNT Nuuk was a brilliant guide and storyteller in the language of Greenland, translated by herself to Danish. KED took a small part in this unfolding story, translated by Helena. The walk through the (in)famous Blok P and its larger surroundings was stunning. An appearing (and disappearing) Nuuk is on the table of discourse ! A discourse that is extensively unfolding in the newspapers, on TV and radio. All media where present on the Nuuk Safari, and the following coffee gathering in TNT Nuuks office (now also D&Us centre when staying in Greenland). Today we have been reading a paper titled "The Tromsø Experiment: Opening up for the unknown" (written in Melbourne!) to be published later this year. The poster Nuuk Safari extends practices and methods from The City Development Year/CDY in Tromsø to Nuuk in Greenland.
D&U, with tnt nuuk architects, is involved in the transformation of this city and its center. Self-Government of Greenland and the City of Nuuk, by its Mayor has invited us into this very challenging task. May bee the most important thing for us to learn is Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit "the Inuit way of doing things".

Cornerstone Ceremony // MySpace, E9 winner, to be built in Trondheim

The winning entry in Europan 9 in Trondheim, the student housing project, is to be built, and will be opened in 2011. This image and the clip from Adresseavisen in Trondheim is from the Cornerstone Ceremony at the site on Wednesday the 27th.
The Minister of Research and Knowledge, Tora Aasland, was present at the ceremony. So where the Mayor of Trondheim Rita Ottervik, Torunn Hegre from the board of the builder, SIT, and Bård Flem from SIT who has been a driving force in making this come through ,and many more as you can see. Juan Elvira and Enrique Krahe from the winning Spanish tema MEK was eagerly present. Hilde Bøkestad and Frederik Shetelig from the Europan Board gave a small speech on Europan and the importance of this event in Trondheim. The president, KED, was not there due to storms in Nothern Norway. The Cornerstone contains drawings, newspapers of the day from Madrid and Trondheim and more interesting things

Europan 9 winner, MySpace, to be built in Trondheim

On Wednesday the 27th of January at 14.00, Knut Eirik as president of Europan Norway, is invited to Trondheim at the corner stone ceremony for the Europan 9 winning entry, MySpace. The builder, Studentsamskipnaden i Trondheim is proudly inviting to this important event. Both for them, the city, Europan and the winning Spanish team based in Rotterdam and Madrid; Murado, Elvira and Krahe.
The Knowledge and Science minister Thora Haug will be present. So will the architects.
The project is now starting construction and will be finished in 2011, an important year for Trondheim. More to come on this issue later.

Europan 10 days in Oslo - Prize ceremony at DogA

Last week the winners of the Europan 10 competition i Norway was announced at a grand price ceremony at DogA in Oslo, crowded house with eager people kewing up outside.
At the same vent it was the opening of Eurovisions. A smashing exhibition of the winning entries in the three cities Vardø, Trondheim and Oslo organized by Norsk Form, created by Fantastic Norway with Europan support. See; europan.no
The minister Karl Erik Schjøtt Pedersen (born and raised in Vardø) gave an opening speech about the importance of Europan for the National govenments policy on architecture and urbanism. Nina Berre, the newly appointed director of architecture at The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design (now head of Norsk Form) gave a fien speech also relating Europan Norway to is late founder Cornelius Brekke.

This anniversary edition of Europan attracted a record high number of participants to the Norwegian sites. For the first time, leading international researchers have made an overview of snow and ice melting globally. The conclusions show that the snow-and ice-covered areas will disappear faster than previously thought. - This is frightening news. World leaders must now work out a solution that ensures dramatic cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. It's not a lokal issue - its a global issue.

Today two alarming reports about climate change in the cryosphere has been presented at COP 15. Al Goore and Jonas Gahr Støre presented the report Melting snow and ice-A call for action (made in Tromsø) and Dorte Dahl Jensen presented the report The Greenland Ice Sheet in a Changing Climate.

At the pressconference with Denmarks’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Per Stig Møller and Greenland Premier Kuupik Kleist, Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Støre, and researcher Dorte Dahl Jensen , it came up a really interesting discussion about Greenlands special position, located by the melting ice in a historical moment where they need to build up their own economy in order to get political freedom.

At klimaforum09, the alternative climate congress, the voices that are not heard in the official congress gather, share ideas, and creates strategies for a sustainable future. Here comes the environmental movement in the North, together with indigenous people from the South, so this can be a turning point.

First of i just want to say thank you to Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, for creating all them wonderful movies. I've literally grown up with the Ghibli collection. And i've always loved it, from when i saw Spirited Away in first grade in year 2000, to now. And i think that it was the Miyazaki movies which awoke my interest in drawing. The following text is written with the possible vulnerability of the event taking place in Copenhagen in December, the United Nations Climate Conference in mind – be aware.

Architecture and planning interacts with a wide range of disciplines. As an architect you need to get an overlook, an understanding of the dynamics in fields far outside our own discipline. How to get there? We already, by keeping updated on the news, know too much about climate change, injustice, financial crisis, poverty and wars to be touched by it. Only rarely something floats up, an image, a story, and moves us. We know too much and it does not exist. But in the undercurrent of this flow of information it is possible to find people, experts on their field, researchers, humanitarian workers and artists that lend their eyes and voice to for us invisible people. Discoveries on the web, dialogue, observations and findings can bring the dynamics of wast theoretical fields and actions within range, opening up for a possible cartography of vulnerability – a discovery.

Vindstille eller storm i København?

Over lengre tid er det skapt et forventningsrom til COP 15 gjennom store internasjonale forskningsinnsatser, konstant mediedekning og et vibrerende internett.

– Akkurat nå er vi i de reduserte forventningers tid når det gjelder Københavnkonferansen.

– En uro kommer nå til uttrykk gjennom opprop i media fra kjente personer og organisasjoner om alt vi kan og bør gjøre selv som svar på den politiske maktesløsheten globalt, sier Knut Eirik i intervju med Jan Carlsen som kan leses i arkitektnytt.

For å sitere Naomi Klein (i Dagbladet 18. november): «Hvis klimaet var en bank ville det bli reddet – ikke overlatt til markedets brutalitet». Det betyr ifølge henne at en global ulydighet, en ny type motstand må vokse ut av en mulig København-tristesse.

Our proposal for Nordhavnen is being discussed in the latest issue of Conditions magazine. Under the interesting label Dead or Alive the uncertain futures of winning competition proposals are being researched.

Encircling the Øresund dynamics

During 2008 the Tromsø based firms 70°N arkitektur and Dahl&Uhre architects were awarded 1.prizes in two important competitions in the Øresund region. In 2007 the cultural fund Realdania launched the two parted idea competion Öresund Visions 2040. 70°N and D&U’s concept Mosaïc::Region recieved one of two first prizes. The discoveries in this larger geographical and time scale made it mandatory for the team to take part in the Nordhavnen competition. Also in this ambitious idea and planning competition, 70°N and D&U received one of three first prizes with the concept Excentral Park – Edge Dynamics. The competition was organized by Copenhagen City and its institution City and Harbour (By og Havn). The timeline for realizing Nordhavnen is unto 2060.
The jury in Öresund Visions 2040 consisted of leading academics, artists and young architects. The jury in the Nordhavnen competion was more of a political stronghold including lord mayor of Copenhagen Ritt Bjerregaard and mayor Klaus Bondam among others.
So, it is possible to say that together the statements, signals and terminology of these two competions from the Norwegian team are accepted as highly relevant views on the future Öresund, in time to come. Both by the academic and the political environment in the
region – in theory.

The Nordhavnen experience
Nordhavnen is part of an extension strategy for Copenhagen with 40 000 residents and
40 000 workplaces on an industrial landfill out into the seascape of Öresund.
The competition program was ambitiuos on all levels of sustainability, bordering on images of the ideal city, as the political and planning forces of Copenhagen see it to day, prolonged into an unknown future. The fact that Copenhagen hosts the United Nations Climate Conference in December 2009 (COP15) informed the program with the ambition that Nordhavnen can be presented here as a world leading Copenhagen example.

The jury said this about Excentral Park – Edge Dynamics: “The jury believes that the entry presents, through its strategies, a genuinely new perception of a structure plan and consequently sets new horizons for urban development”.
With this enlightening jury comment the Norwegian firms entered a second phase with the two Danish winners as opponents. During three months, in continuos dialogues with a board of representatives from the Copenhagen authorities, City and Harbour and three former jury members, the concept was tested related to a series of questions from this board, and the jury.
After these explorations of the concept the Norwegian firms recieved a short note from the board that one of the Danish groups was chosen as advicers for the planning process in Nordhavnen. Up to now the Norwegian team has not seen any extensive response of any kind on this second step.

Uncertain futures and public debate
The team has lately been debating their concept in the context of both the Danish and Swedish associations of Landscape Architects. Before a very vibrant discussion on their Edge Dynamics concept took place at the conference World in Denmark this summer, the Norwegian team asked Kent Martinussen, leader of DAC and part of both the jury and the board in Nordhavnen, why this enormous extension of Copenhagen is nearly not visible in the media. He said that there are three reasons. The first is that COP15 is dominating all media, nothing else makes the headlines. The second is that nothing is discussed before the building cranes are in Nordhavnen, the third is that strong political forces goes for a freezing of the whole Nordhavnen concept, in a time of financial crisis.
An experience with both competitions in the region is that there to a very little extent is an offensive attitude from the inviting parties towards the media. No press conferences and debates of any importance, no debating arrangements around the exhibitions and so on.
If and when the team and the Edge Dynamics concept will reappear in the Nordhavnen context is yet unknown.

Conditions will present the Norwegian team’s Öresund findings in an upcoming issue. For the moment The Nordhavnen concept is exhibited in Hamburg, and the team, 70°N and D&U, is now following up their Öresund encircling in a master studio at BAS, possibly waiting for the next challenge in the Öresund Metropole.

Mind Field Lund // Mosaïc::Region // The Map Collection

When we in 2007 swept through the mosaic region we found that the city of Lund just had published its debate program for 2020. There they asked themselves about the future of speed networks, the growth direction, their regional and local importance - and so they became a part of 'everything that comes within our reach' in the mosaic. The urban area between Malmö and Lund is brimming with the region's research and landscape competence. With a local population in search of a sustainable future, we highlight Mind Field Lund as a proactive study of a landscape, going from one state to another - a possible new form of urbanity in the mosaic. In such an exploration of a new urban landscape potential, each farm can be regarded as a laboratory for a new urban topography - observation posts in dialogue with the latent information in the field's knowledge base. In the Metro Ring's availability network, this new urban landscape experiment platform becomes a possible attraction of the first order. The tentative statements in the map 'Thought Field Lund' is taken from the research fields of SLU.

First session of the Norwegian Europan 10 jury and Ellen van Loon in lecture

Scandinavian conversations on the Malmö dynamics at SLU Alnarp

Last week we were revisiting the Øresund region with our mosaïc mindset and 19 architect- and landscape architect students from Bergen School of Architecture. After studying Malmö in the virtual world for two weeks, under the headlines of New Hierarchies and Imbedded Information, it was time for us and the students to enter this field of exploration, walk the streets, meet the people and hit the dynamics and the patterns that connects.... An in depth research into the imbedded information of Malmö.

On Thursday we had conversations with prof.Carola Wingren and her students from the landscape architect department at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Alnarp.

The journalist Peter Sylwan and the head of urban straties in Malmö, Johan Emanuelson, guided us through the possible future agricultural landscape and into the growing city.

Carola Wingren's master course is dealing with how Malmö can meet future challenges from sea level rise. SLU Alnarp is set in a large, old park with thousands of species plants and trees north of Malmö. We rounded up this fine day with a walk in this beautiful park.
The Malmö findings will be posted at city as biotope under the label Elasticity.

Greenhouse Gas Emission Data on Google Maps // link // The Map Collection

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change secretariat has cooperated with Google and the Danish government as hosts of COP 15 to display official UNFCCC greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data for Annex I Parties using Google Maps. The Maps are now online and can be accessed on the UNFCCC GHG data interface. Users can select on a world map total national GHG emissions/removals as well as emissions/removals from various sectors; absolute numbers (in Gg CO2 equivalent); or relative changes in emissions (in per cent compared to the base year level). Information is provided for all sectors (such as energy, agriculture, etc) and for the major sub-sectors (such as transport within the energy sector). By gas, the data cover aggregate GHGs, CO2, CH4, N2O, SF6, HFCs and PFCs.

The universal city defines itself not only as the catalyst of cultural, social, economic and ecological processes, but also as the seismograph of global developments. Never before has there been such consensus between politicians and the public on the question of how we can innovatively and constructively improve our living environment. Given global challenges to develop sustainable strategies in architecture and urban design, the architectural profession assumes a significant role and responsibility. This exhibition and catalogue present a diverse spectrum of buildings in various stages of development and completion as well as visionary designs which address sustainable strategies in the context of current architectural and urban developments worldwide. Selected projects provide an exciting insight (not overview) into current planning in the city of Hamburg, as well as a fascinating and rather surprising collection of projects, designs and visions which excite our imaginations, give us strength, motivation and which hopefully inspire us to further examine themes of sustainability.

Three of our projects are mentioned in the latest issue of PLAN - Tidsskrift for samfunnsplanlegging, bolig og byplan og regional utvikling.

John Pløger refers in his Article, Ambivalens og etos - forskjeller og likheter i byplanlegging i Norge og Danmark, to The Game of Tromsø and The Year of Urban Development (BYÅR05) as some of the more "spectacular" experiments in norwegian planning, with reference to our paper Openness and experiment.

Hanne Bertnes and Aasne Haug uses the Nordhavnen competition as a case in the article Et møte med dansk planmiljø.
"Hvordan sikres intensjonene i en god plan? Er det i styrkeforholdet mellom offentlig ansvarlighet og private investorer man finner svaret, eller er det mer i prosessen og mindre i selve svaret?
De tre vinnerne etter første runde i Nordhavnen hadde ulike svar på akkurat dette. Mens de to danske prosjektene la opp til en "tradisjonell" planstrategi der planen definerer de fysiske strukturer, satset det norske vinnerbidraget på en prosessbasert planstrategi, der viktige offentlige strukturer defineres, men der fremtidens fysiske omgivelser defineres suksessivt med utviklingen. Denne tankemåten erkjenner at vi ikke vet hva fremtidens samfunn trenger, men er samtidig mer krevende for planleggere og utviklere som ønsker forutsigbarhet."

"How to secure the intentions of a good plan?
The three winning concepts in the Nordhavnen competition had different answers to this question. While both the danish projects presented a 'traditional' planning strategy where the plan defines the physical structures, the norwegian winning proposal went for a process based planning strategy, where important public structures are defined, but where the physical surroundings of the future are defined successively with the development. This thinking recognizes that we do not know what tomorrow's society needs, but is at the same time more challenging for planners and developers who wish predictability."

– Kurset brukte konkurranseutkastet til 70°N arkitektur og Dahl & Uhre for Nordhavnen i København som byøkologisk rammeverk for oppgaven, forteller Nygaard. – Studentene tegnet et besøkssenter med biologisk mangfold og økologi som tema. Slik ble studentenes arbeid indirekte knyttet til oppkjøring mot COP 15-konferansen.

Rasmus Ejrnæs, seniorforsker ved Afd. for Vildtbilogi og Biodiversitet, Aarhus Universitet og Hans Henrik Bruun, docent ved Ekologiska Institutionen, Lunds Universitet har skrevet en viktig og innsiktsfull tekst om sårbarhet og naturforvaltning. Her kommer noen utdrag fra kronikken:

"....Omsat til naturforvalterens sprog lyder brandmandens lov således: Først må man redde den natur, som endnu ikke er ødelagt. Dernæst gælder det om at fjerne de negative påvirkninger fra den øvrige natur, som er under ødelæggelse. Når tilstanden i den bestående natur er gunstig, kan det give mening at etablere ny natur.Desværre har denne enkle lov aldrig vundet indpas blandt beslutningstagere højere oppe i systemet. Om det skyldes at beslutningstagerne ikke kan overskue den vilde naturs kompleksitet, eller ganske enkelt foretrækker at klippe snore ved indvielser af ny natur, kan være svært at afgøre. Men det er et spørgsmål værd, om de begrænsede midler, der afsættes til naturformål, bruges omkostningseffektivt, når brandmandens lov vendes på hovedet....
....Næringsstofferne forvilder sig ud i naturen fra landbrug og afbrænding af fossile brændstoffer. Kvælstof kommer via luften, og kvælstof og fosfor transporteres også ud i naturen med drænvandet fra de dyrkede marker. Det er velkendt, at næringsstofferne slukker lyset og skaber iltsvind i søer, fjorde og lavvandede havområder, men næringsstofferne ødelægger også levestederne på land.
Effekten kan synes knap så dramatisk på land. Her ligger fuglene ikke med bugen i vejret og gisper efter luft, men tabet af nøjsomhedsplanter, sommerfugle, vilde bier, rensdyrlaver og svampe er ikke desto mindre voldsomt. De vilde dyr, planter og svampe har aldrig tidligere i evolutionens lange historie været udsat for et lignende tæppebombardement med næringsstoffer....
....Vi vil vove den påstand, at det frem for at etablere ny natur på dyrkede marker og gødskede enge vil være langt mere omkostningseffektivt at:
• Udvide arealet med urørt skov i Danmark ved at standse den forstlige drift i eksisterende skove.
• Sikre græsning af eksisterende naturområder i Danmark, som i dag henligger uden græsning, både skove og lysåbne naturtyper.
• Beskytte eksisterende naturområder mod næringsforurening ved at udlægge dyrknings- og gødningsfrie bufferzoner i kanten af marker, hvorfra der i dag foregår udvaskning til overdrev, heder, moser, skove og enge. Ikke bare helt nede ved selve vandløbet, men oppe i kanten af marken, hvor ådalen, kystskrænten eller strandengen begynder.
• Genskabe det naturlige vandkredsløb i eksisterende naturområder ved at sløjfe dræn og grøfter og beskytte eksisterende natur mod vandindvinding...."

'scape // Adaptive seaward extension for Copenhagen

The duch architect and writer Joren Jacobs has made an article about the planning strategies in our Nordhavnen project, Edge Dynamics in 'scape 1# 2009 .

Ever-evolving

The vision of 70°N and Dahl & Uhre clearly opposes traditional linear development which can neither cope with change, nor cater for creative solutions. it cannot do what the people of Copenhagen requested: "no-regulation zones", a place "a bit rough, messy and unpolished", because "the unexpected is attractive". So in addition to their flexible basic structure plan 70°N and Dahl & Uhre's strategy is an ever-evolving open plan process and dialogue. This involves a broad collaborative exchange with many different parties, like journalists, citizens, landscape architects and researchers in various fields (biology, agriculture, economy, energy, marine enviroment, rainwater and culture). As the design firms put it themselves: " One must establish a universe of ideas beyond the field of thought of the developer-institution. In our strategy, the the programming of Nordhavn and the development strategy must constantly be charged with new knowledge. It is possible to see this project as a work of art - in progress." JJ

The aftermath of COP 15 // Nordhavnen // The Map Collection

In the era ‘after COP 15’ it is possible to picture a new type of discourse about cities’ and landscapes’ development that might proceed in other directions than the presumed ideal, linear urban development of an ideal site. Such an enlarged perspective, this essential side view, is difficult to trace in the competition program for Nordhavnen. In the previous diagrams, illustrating the regional dialogue between Denmark and Sweden up until COP 15, one clearly sees a hyper attention in both politics and development about current projects. In the third diagram it is claimed that the different projects cannot be seen on the site alone, nor in their close city surroundings, but that every single project developed in the region must relate to a larger geographical picture and a larger time frame. It is a fact that the region can absorb a large growth; compared to Holland the entire Ring City (‘the green heart’) with approximately 7 million people can be ‘relocated’ to the Øresund region (‘the blue heart’). The region of Øresund can be seen as a complex dynamic of events. Additionally in Nordhavnen after COP 15, a renewed ecological reflection must characterize both the natural-, the production- and the urban landscape. The ambitions are several, but the future insecurities on every level are larger. In Nordhavnen this means, ‘not to be able to predict time, but to use time as a material’. In such a dialogue between ambition and insecurity the fundamental structure of Nordhavnen might contribute to adjust urban conditions on several levels: - locally in Nordhavnen, in a larger picture containing all the large landfillings in Copenhagen, in a larger timeframe and geography embracing events in the entire region, in the Øresund metropolis’s future containing limitless exchanges and high velocity networks, and not the least in a global discussion about urban sustainable development.

Uncertainty in the larger geography and time.

In the contest program the development of Nordhavnen is motivated by Copenhagen’s future increase in population, and by the fact that other areas are filled up faster than one thought prior. The program’s dialogue is limited to other closely located development zones as Ørestaden, the Carlsberg area and Kløvermarken. Nordhavnen must be explored and developed in a larger picture, where both the global as well as the regional context are at work. The idea of the Øresund region opens for an image where Nordhavnen enters into a dialogue with events and developments in a geographically larger region; in Malmö with Bo01, the new metro and the urban development project in Hyllie, and in Helsingborg with the development of Norra hamnen and H+. There is a kind of conversation, if not an exchange, between these initiatives as markers in the possible future metropolis image of Øresund. There is every possible reason for developers and developing constellations to look aside.

The competition of Ørestaden in 1994 can be seen as Copenhagen’s urban answer to the Öresund Bridge project. The program for Ørestaden was as ambitious as for Nordhavnen, but in a different time. Here the ambitions of Copenhagen as an important city in a European economic picture were dominant (new Docklands etc.) The ideal world of Ørestaden, as a line of growth out towards Amager’s periphery, have not however been sustained in dialogue with the larger image of the city. More interesting urban developments have taken place in other parts of Copenhagen, and ideas and ambitions have disintegrated in Ørestaden’s era.
Nordhavnen has now been designated as the place for seven present ambition’s criteria summed up as ‘The Sustainable City of the Future’. As in Ørestaden a linear direction of development has been chosen, but this time directly into the Øresund Strait, functioning as a game board for these ambitions. The program’s statement is that all ambitions that have not taken place other places will happen here, - not unlike the ‘best of all’-programs for Ørestaden.

ARKITEKTURPOLITIKK // fra Tromsøsamtalene

I to dager har Kjersti Nerseth, NALs president vært i Tromsø. En dag med byens arkitekter og en dag med byens administrasjon og politikere.
Temaet er regjeringens kommende arkitekturpolitiske handlingsplan. Spesielt engasjerende var møtet med leder for byutviklingskomiteen Eduardo da Silva(AP), byplanssjef Erik Øwre og arkitekter fra Tromsø, Bodø og Mo i Rana. Nerseth viser til Tromsø som forbilde nasjonalt med de to store byutviklingsprosessene Spillet om Tromsø/1995 og Byutviklingens år/2005.
En intens og flott diskusjon oppsto rundt den siste prosessen som jo var igangsatt av politikerne, men som ble ledet og gjennomført med en ledelse på utsiden av systemet.

Vi syns byplanssjefen oppsummerte drøftelsene på en fin måte da han sa: ”Kanskje det er på tide å lansere noen helt nye ambisjoner for byen”. Mer om dette senere….!
I møte med ordfører Arild Hausberg og kulturråd Irene Valstad Simonsen kom det interessante i at Tromsø kommunes parole om 100% barnehagedekning faktisk har ført til en rekke fine prosjekter som er prisbelønnet og som har fått stor internasjonal oppmerksomhet. Altså et dristige politiske signaler får arkitekter til å ta seg helt ut og bli oppfinnsomme. Avisa Nordlys samlet deltakerne ute i solen og trykket lien spalte dagen etter. Vi synes presidentens Norgesturne er flott, og er glad for den innlevelse hun viser. Spesielt gleder vi oss til redaktøren av Arkitektnytt kommer med et helt nummer om denne dramatiske krysningen gjennom landet.

Hun var her i går og i dag sammen med redaktør i Arkitektnytt, Grete Kristin Hennissen og direktør i NAL, Pål Stephensen for å samtale med politikere og arkitekter. I morgen legger vi ut en liten tekst om Tromsøsamtalene... Regjeringa legger i løpet av sommeren 2009 fram en handlingsplan for arkitektur i Norge. Gisles Kronikk i Nordlys setter den lokale arkitekturpolitikken i perspektiv.

”Det er ikke nok at tro, at vi kan genopprette en balance. Det bliver nødvendig med en løpende og dynamisk tilpasning til de dramatiske klimaændringer. Hvordan udvikler vi vores civilisation under disse skiftende vilkår?
Byen kan kun blive løsningen via borgernes deltagelse. På den måde kan der ske en professionalisering og demokratisering, hvor borgerne i de sociale nættverk, virksomheder og bymiljøer spiller sammen som urbane fællesskaber. Det er i disse urbane fællesskaber
- der kan transformere seg sammen med byen – at tilpassningen til klimaændringerne kan foregå dynamisk og hurtig nok”.

På UIAs fagseminar 15. og 16. juni annonserte jeg at dette utsagnet fra Peter S. Jørgensen i Weekendavisen skulle være mitt point of departure. Som sagt så gjort. Sammen med en nytenkning rundt byutviklingens år avstedkom dette nogle flotte diskusjoner. Jeg viste kartet fra utstillingen Tromsø X-Files i 2005 der alle de nye prosjekter antastet byen nærmest som røde hunder i boligboomens epoke.
Byplanssjef Gunnar Stavrum i Kristiansand la etterpå fram en sjelsettende, bevegelig powerpoint-framstilling av hvordan 37 prosjekter nå på tilsvarende måte bombarderer Kristiansand i dag. Og han spurte oss med hånden på hjertet; ”hva gjør jeg med dette!”
Samtidig viste han en slående framstilling av hvordan planetaten nesten aldri var de som initierte og startet prosjekter, og at de altså nærmest kom i offerets posisjon – sterkt!
Journalisten fra Fædrelandsvennen som var engasjert tilstede begge dagene grep jo straks tak i at Tromsøs oppdagende og avdekkende metoder burde kunne tilflyte Kristiansand. Altså at det å stille ut er åpne opp.

Mens utbyggerne i Kristiansand tilsynelatende har lite sidesyn til en verden i endring, så debatterte foreleserne på seminaret dynamikk, endringshastigheter og nye og overraskende samarbeidsformer i bylandskapet på friskt vis.
Professor Roy T. Eriksen utviklet sin tekst i siste nummer av Marg, Vandringer i et ruinlandskap, anvendt på Kristiansand og ble en viktig referanse for flere av de etter- følgende foreleserne. Etnologen Kirsti Mathiesen Hjelmdahl fra Agderforskning la fram prosjektet profesjonalisering av kulturnæringene på Sørlandet på et utrolig innlevd vis. Understrømmer som kan få stor betydning for Agderbyenes utvikling. Sensitivitet, dynamikk, hastighet og tilstedeværelse ble lansert som viktig byterminologi av henne. se Fædrelandsvennen

John Pløger var gledelig tilstede med Lefebvre og innom Marianne Skjulhaugs tekst i Marg, Innviklede forbindelser som søker en form.
Gjennom begrepene den kroppslige by, den relationelle by, den narrative by og den meningsfulle by utfoldet han et bilde av hverdagslivet mellom det tenkte, planlagte, og det levde. Han karakteriserte ”handlingen som kontinuerlige brudd med signaler, normer og konvensjoner”.
Kveldseansen i Håndverkerens mørke kulisser med tema Toleranse, litteraturen og byen vår en flott opplevelse med tente, vel forberedte innledere. Paal-Helge Haugen fikk sitt Marg og var meget glad for det.

Why Here? // The Map Collection

This map was our starting point for an investigation on a city development in Stavanger in 2000. It led, together with Paolo Viganos lecture in Cordoba (Europan, 2003) to the text ”Topografiske attraksjoner” (topographical attractions), published in Arkitektnytt in 2003.

In the spring 2010 we will revisit the study field of Jæren through the course, Appearing and Disappearing Landscapes, which is part 2 of AHO's "Research on the Norwegian Landscape". The course is an inter-Nordic cooperation between the AHO and Forests and Landscape at Copenhagen University. Jæren is a region that today has the largest urban growth in Norway after Oslo. The region, which is the centre of oil development in Norway, is now entering into a new phase, causing both landscape and urbanity to be in need of reinterpretation. The course will establish recognition on the larger scale that will affect knowledge built up during the course work. The UN climate conference, COP 15, in December 2009 will send out signals concerning this larger scale.
The Course is planned as a discourse between landscapes and urban conditions that range from the smallest biotope to the larger future image. Students will throughout the semester work on individual projects as experiments in the relationship between different territorial contexts and urban strategies; this will entail both a smart and innovative cartography and conceptual design projects.

Uroen som ligger som en undertekst i alle artiklene i siste nummer av Marg framkaller denne headingen; byen under press. Peter S. Jørgensen sin tekst New York – retten til byen beskriver hvordan nye bevegelser og understrømmer i megabyen er i kontinuerlig dialog og konflikt med administrative virkeligheter og planleggingsteser. I Weekendavisen nr 24, 12. juni har han besøkt utstillingen Fremtidens arkitektur er grønn. Arkitekturens grenser II på Louisiana.
I artikkelen Framtiden er uvissen utvikler han sine New York oppdagelser slik, etter å ha sett MITs klimaadvarsler på utstillingen:

Knut Eirik foreleser på dette seminaret under seminaroverskriften hva kan byplanleggingen tilby og med forelesningstemaet Byen under press som drar noen linjer videre fra det Peter S. Jørgensen åpner for. Heri inkludert noen nye betraktninger rundt Byutviklingens År 05.
Her møter han bla Roy T. Eriksen som foreleser om Vandringer i et ruinlandskap som er en utvikling av hans tekst i siste nummer av tidsskriftet Marg.
Til Kristiansand kommer også Jonny Aspen som stiller spørsmålet trenger vi byteorien og John Pløger som utdyper hva som gjør byrom til samhandlingsrom.
Toleranse, litteraturen og byen er temaet for en kveldsforestilling i Håndverkeren den 15. der John Pløger, Paal-Helge Haugen, Torild Wardenær og Knut Eirik Dahl skal skape noen åpninger.

Resistance // The Map Collection

Each element, every trace describing the appearing manufactured and spiritual landscape is to be considered as resisting change, interposing processes which resists and reformulate actual interventions in space.
A canal or a lake can thus fashion a word of ideas for what is to follow. A planted forest will after 20 years demand respect and care. An area in which all of nature is subject to change during 30 years will by virtue of that change draw attention to itself and become an alternative to all development strategies. Our concept entails exploring how such an incipient landscape shapes its capacity for resistance, in other words how it is shaped in time.
We made this map over Ørestaden in 1994 as a part of The Magic Carpet.

WONDERFUL DAYS

It has been raining now for ages it seems. But in early May we had wonderful days when the arctic spring was trying to get a hold on Strandkanten. We have been living here in our own project for a year now- as an experiment- in a random choice of one of the apartments we have designed. It has been a positive experience. We’re also happy about the landscape project, which are under completion these days, made by Aurora Landscape in collaboration with Ljusarlitektur, 70°N and D&U. Landscape architect Anita Veiseth has done a great job in facilitating the project for teenagers. The young boys, 13-19 years old have already made this landscape their spot in Tromsø. They are hanging out, playing football-games, basket ball and of course skating. Through the Game of Tromsø, we discovered the urban potential of the area. In 2000, as a part of a political process, we reworked the master plan for Strandkanten in collaboration with 70°N and Code.

The Northern Norway Architecture Award

Knut Eirik Dahl has recieved the Northern Norwegian Architects Association's Honour Award for his enduring efforts to increase the understanding for -and raise the quality of- our urban environments. .

The two architectural awards for 2009 were given to:
- Ungdomshuset Straumanstua in Lofoten by Jarmund/Vigsnæs
- The rehabilitation of Hamningberg in East Finnmark.The project has been a collaboration between Båtsfjord, Vardø, Finnmark Fylkeskommune, Riksantikvaren and Statens Vegvesen.
The prize ceremony for the Northern Norway Architecture Award was in Tromsø at NAF's annual meeting, june 5.

Melting Ice // The Map Collection

This map from 2006, which we made for the arctic cities exhibition at the 10'th architectural Biennale in Venice together with a great team, shows the early estimates for the meltdown of the ice cap. Today we know for a fact that the process is going much faster. Two years later Jan Gunnar Winther, Director of the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø, stated: ”The summer of 2007 was a record year climate-wise: the ice in the Arctic was down 20% from the previous record year in 2005. The September Ice in 2007 was historically small in scale and one thus expects a new record low in 2008. Mathematical climatic models has not been able to take into account these fast changes. They don’t reproduce reality well enough.” The climate change sets new conditions for spatial planning. Manhattan Transfer // The Map Collection

Along the ridge of Tromsø Island there runs a band of continues woodlands – the Tromsø Common – which in size and extension corresponds to that of Central Park in New York. Back in 1994 we superpositioned Manhattan on this map over the Tromsø Island. Tromsø was experiencing an explosive urban growth, and it was necessary discuss the lokal attitude towards nature as an unlimited resource. The Tromsø common vas already changing from being nature to become a park. 14 years later the map still has actuality in the urban discource i Tromsø - it has proved to be a valid statement.
The fact that we have an urban park of an international format is the most visible urbane trait in Tromsø that necessitates a further urbanisation. The Green Line bind all the city areas together, in winter functioning almost as a metro for cross-country skiers and families on a hike.

The Danish biologist Peder Agger and the geographer Jesper Brandt, published in 1986 the result of 10 years of research, analysis and wanderings through the text The Dynamics of Small Biothopes in Danish agricultural landscapes. It describes a landscape under pressure, it raises the question about the vulnerability of the landscape, about relationships, and describes this as voices that speak to us about survival. It is a classic text in landscape research and made a strong impression on us when we found it on the web two years ago. Peder Agger is Chairman of the Danish Council of Ethics and professor at the Department of Environment, Technology and Social Studies, Roskilde University, Denmark. This screenshot of the MAREANO map viewer shows the area of hydrographic survey data at the Norwegian continental shelf, an area bigger than the Norwegian mainland. On the MAREANO map wiever you click into registrations, images and videos of the seabed.
Global heating increases the pressure on coastal areas and ocean zones, the seabed itself and the quality of the ocean areas are at stake – the resources here constitute the world’s future "granaries" and "larders". It is the mapping and change of this seascape that now appears as the big challenge – a future and appearing landscape undergoing a dramatic and complex process of change. This environmental mapping’s collision with the mapping of fossil resources can from hegemonic milieus be seen as a disturbing mapping.
MAREANO maps depth and topography, sediment composition, biodiversity, habitats and biotopes as well as pollution in the seabed in Norwegian coastal and offshore regions.The MAREANO Programme aims to provide answers to questions such as: How is the seascape of the Norwegian continental shelf? What does the seabed consist of? How is the biodiversity distributed on the seabed? How are habitats and biotopes distributed on the seabed? What is the relationship between the physical environment, biodiversity and biological resources? How are contaminants stored in sediments? MAREANO is coordinated by the Institute of Marine Research, in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Norway and the Norwegian Hydrographic Service.The Programme is financed by the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Trade and Industry via contributions from the National Budget.

Mareano skulle kartlegge biologisk mangfold på havbunnen i nordområdene. Men på grunn av lave bevilgninger over mange år, blir ikke prosjektet ferdig. Kartlegging av havbunnen

Lørdag hadde Nordlys en fire siders reportasje om funnene som havforskerne har gjort under kartleggingen av havbunnen utenfor Lofoten/ Vesterålen og Troms. Det er oppsiktsvekkende og ny kunnskap som her refereres. Og den vil gripe rett inn i den debatten om petroleumsaktivitet som kommer for fullt når forvaltningsplanen skal revideres.
