Long Time No See

We haven’t seen much of each other this year, but we have at least been able to follow each other’s lives through the media. Knut Eirik featured in the film Gollegiisa – Skattkammeret, Sara have done amazing works in graphic design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Iver and friends, has started the band Monolith House and will be playing at both Trænafestivalen and Buktafestivalen this summer, and Kjerstin has been digging herself into the world of academy and mineral conflicts with her PhD Project at AHO, a recent sideshow was a text for the wonderful project Hollow Earth by Tanya Busse and Emilija Skarnulyte.

Oh Erskine, oh Erskine

Now the time has expired for the contestants on the new Kiruna, the town that will replace the old one when LKAB burrows deeper beneath it. At City Hall in Kiruna, you can now see all the ten teams competing proposals for the new city form and function.

"Possible Greenland" exhibition review: Hjemme i verden - hvor ble det av den kritiske revy?

«Possible Greenland» fortæller historien om geologiske dannelsesprocesser i fortiden og om en mulig fremtid for landet som resurseleverandør i en ny geologisk æra – antropocene – menneskehedens tidsalder. Med en forventning til de muligheder, klimændringerne kan åbne for i nord, bliver publikum forklaret, at storskala industriudvikling vil kunne muliggøre etablering af nyt erhvervsliv og en ny urban kultur. Nutiden og den nære fortid bliver kun berørt lidt.

Artikkelen i Sermitsiaq er oversatt til grønlandsk og dansk, og den tar for seg på hvilken måte Dansk Arkitektur Center har gått inn i geopolitikken.  Utstillingen ble vist på den 13. Arkitektur Biennalen i Venezia i 2012 og skal vises i Nuuk i 2013.

Hele Arktis står overfor en ny bølge af intensiv resurseudnyttelse. De nordiske lande harmoniserer sine strategier for at gøre det attraktivt for industrierne at etablere sig i nord. Nationalstaterne kan ikke af egen kraft realisere sine natur resurser. Dette fører til komplicerede forhandlinger mellem industri og samfund om fordeling af fordele og ulemper. Den koloniale fortid aktiveres på overraskende måder. I Nord-Skandinavia kommer den fortiede kolonihistorien til utrykk på nytt, når Sápmi blir gjenstand for nasjonalstatenes planer om økt industrialisering. Positioner flytter sig og nye modsætninger og alliancer opstår. I mødet med multinationale, kapitalstærke selskaber kommer lokaldemokratiet under pres. Grønland og Danmark er ikke så ensomme i nord som utstillingen gir inntrykk av. En kartlegging av initiativer og samarbeid som foregår på tvers i forskning og erhverv, og fra folk til folk, vest-øst og sirkumpolart ville løftet utstillingen.    issuu

Kiruna debatterer

”Våra samhällen lever och andas med gruvindustrin. Då ska också invånarna få verktygen att ta ansvar och planera för framtiden. Det är inte konstigare än att en metallarbetare behöver maskiner för att forma sina detaljer, eller att en arkitekt behöver skissblock och dataprogram.

En arkitekt med intressanta åsikter om just detta är professorn Knut Eirik Dahl. Han har på uppdrag av norska regeringen undersökt förhållandet mellan gruvorna och samhällena i Barents och presenterat slutsatserna under rubriken Fields of Exploration – Limits of Exploitation (ungefär ”Utforskningens fält – Exploateringens gränser”).

Flott at vårt master studio landskap ved AHO sine kunnskaper brer seg ut, bloggen studeres vidt og bredt.

Det rommer av og til små feiltolkninger, også noen oppmuntrende. Vi skulle gjerne sett at det var den norske regjeringen som ga oss oppdraget, men slik var det jo ikke. Selv om Utenriksdepartementet deltok meget aktivt og kunnskapsrikt på den første workshopdagen i vårt studio.

Fields of Exploration, Limits of Exploitation

For å få utsagnskraft i forhandlingen om framtiden må arkitekturen med sine verktøy agere i den delen av nåtiden der framtiden er i spill. Gjennom 9 hektiske vårvinteruker, der informasjon om raske endringer i det globale og økonomiske mineralbildet hele tiden kom strømmende mot oss, gjorde studioet sammen med 20 eksperter i feltet en oppdagelsesreise i overlappingen mellom forskjellige kunnskapsområder som angår mineralindustrien. Gjennom temaene Det store bilde, Det Perforerte Landskap, Det flerprogrammerte Landskap, og en samling av individuelle Refleksjoner utforsket studioet hvordan en ny versjon av Nord-Norge er i ferd med å bli unnfanget, kartlagt og beskrevet gjennom nasjonale tiltak og strategier for resursutvinning. Det oppdaget hvilket mulighetsrom Regjeringens kommende mineralstrategi bereder grunnen for og hvilket press dette legger på kultur og landskap.

The 9 week studio took off from the global appetite and dependency on metals and minerals, and related it to national initiatives and strategies for mineral extraction as they now are in the making in Northern Norway. During 2012 the Norwegian government will present its own mineral strategy. The studio aimed to unfold the social, legal and environmental implications of an increased extraction seen through the lenses of the landscape architect. Through the themes The Big Picture, the Perforated Landscape, the Multi Layered Landscape, and a collection of individual Reflections the studio discovered how a new version of the territory are being mapped, described and conceived. Mining doesn’t only denote big profits; its industry also entails large scale impacts on landscape, nature and society. The notion of actuality, on taking part in the debate and acting in the world while things are happening discusses the landscape architects agency in taking part in the shaping of futures.

THE BIG PICTURE 

The first phase of the course is about mapping and building up an atlas on the global system of mining. We will study the forces that drive mining, the increased resource consumption, mining’s global network

and infrastructure and how this plays out in the circumpolar areas.

THE PERFORATED LANDSCAPE

The second phase creates a catalogue on mining’s impact on the landscape, study new geological surveys, modes of mining, the life cycle of a mine and mining’s environmental impacts.

In this phase we will examine the impact of mining on communities, the indigenous dimension, the overlapping use of land, legislation and competing activities by making a 
magazine of chronicles.

Basert på kunnskapsinnhenting, studiereise, samtaler og workshops med kursets lærere og eksterne eksperter formulerer studentene sine refleksjoner sammensatt av de kunnskapene som er tilført studioet. REFLECTIONS

Based on the research, study travel, conversations and workshops with course teachers and

external experts, the students formulate reflections composed of the knowledge acquired during the studio. The collection shows the breadth, depth, possibilities and impacts of this new national initiative in Northern Norway.

Who builds the map?

On our journey in Spain in November, Pilar Pinchart was present at our lecture at ETSAM in Madrid invited by Juan Herreros. In the discussion after the lecture Pilar was very interested in the notion "The New Economical Landcape". The day after we had a conversation on this topic, and more, at the beautifull space in Hotel de las Letras in Madrid.

La Byen Synges

Når bystyret i Tromsø trakk søknaden om innlemmelse i Samisk språkområde, mistet vi en viktig mulighet til å befeste et viktig kulturelt lag i våre offentlige rom; til å tilføre en kompleksitet som skaper møter mellom mennesker og fortellinger. Tromsø gikk glipp av muligheten å formidle at byen anerkjenner at den er et sted hvor to verdener møtes.

Nye visuelle språk og ideer oppstår i kampsonene. I høst har vi sett New York gallerier plukke opp Occupy Wall Streets «scruffy cardboard signs» og 15-M bevegelsens visuelle språk bli brukt i Vodafones mobilabonnementskampanje. Vi har sett vrengte kofter. Protestaksjoner er en del av vår kulturelle produksjon og blir etter hvert plukket opp av reklamebransjen, mote, film og kunst.

Tromsø kan ikke kreve av de samiske miljøene at de alltid skal måtte hente den kreative energien i kampen for rettigheter og synlighet - en synlighet som Norge og Tromsø markedsfører for alt den er verdt.

OAF starter forelesningsrekken 2012 med fire forelesere og presentasjon av vinnerprosjektene fra the Nordic Architecture Award 2011 :

Journalist Mark Isitt (sverige) starter foredraget med en kort presentasjon av Nordic Architecture Award og avslutter med en oppsummering og om tendenser i nordisk samtidsarkitektur.
En av målene til Oslo Arkitektforening er å nå lengre ut til folket med arkitekturen og vi tar i bruk nye steder i Oslo by til OAF-foredrag i 2012.

TERRITORIAL PRACTICES / CONFERENCE

Arctic Frontiers 2012 / Tromsø
The conference asks if and how industrial practices and global economic practices are able to develop in a close and sustainable connection to local landscape conditions. It also asks how architectural practices can identify and create awareness of landscape spaces that are not immediately visual. It seeks to demonstrate the significance of architectural logics, explorations and concepts for social development.
The conference will work explore new vocabularies, tools and methods for a sustainable development of the complex set of practices operating within the same territories.

Valencia debates - shear energy

In three days in November we lectured and debated in Valencia. This gallery of participants shows the energy and engagement of the artists, architects, designers, researchers and students. In the round-table discussions we had Maria Helstrøm Reimert between us translating from Spanish to Scandinavian – a top performance. The discussion continued into the nights.

Europan 11 Prize Ceremony

The 14th of December the Prize Ceremony for Europan 11 takes place in Oslo. The day after this the first dialogue between the prize-winning teams and the three participating cities takes place. Be present at the ceremony and meet the ambituos cities and the young architects from all over Europe, entering the Norwegian cities in transformation.

On our way to lecture on "Appearing and Disappearing Landscapes" in Valencia, we are "hijacked" to give a lecture at ETSAM in Madrid. The title of this lecture is a light reference to Eduardo Bru’s book "Coming from the South". We read this book at the Europan Forum in Cordoba some years ago, and it informed us then.
We will elaborate on some of our findings seeing our projects as touchstones in the Nordic landscape. At the Europan Forum in Oslo KED was involved in series of discussions on the tensions in Spain, Portugal et al.So being present in Spain today must be quite an experience. Belinda Tato and Ecosistema Urbano from Madrid are now in Hamar working for two months, in direct dialogue with the people in Hamar, with the project Dream Hamar. We find this Spanish/Norwegian interchange really enlightening. Angel Borrego Cubero, professor at ETSAM, was interviewed by Bryan Farrel in May under the title "The beauty and vision of Spain’s "revolution". Here he talks about the role of young architects in the new Spanish realities.
We really look forward to our Spanish journey.

competitive futures

Knut Eirik, President of Europan Norway, is on his way to EUROPAN FORUM in Oslo this weekend,  The Forum of Cities and Juries brings together the 17 Europan national structures, members of the 14 juries, and representatives of the 49 sites involved in Europan 11. The Forum of Cities and Juries is structured as a series of debates, working groups, architectural excursions and social gatherings to discuss solutions and focus adjudication of the entries that have been short-listed by national juries. New in the Europan Forum context is the public and academic program constructing The Europan Week in Oslo.

Kjerstin is going to Harstad to participate in the jury for the Open Idea Competition on sustainable urban development. The  exhibition of entries opens tomorrow at 6 pm in Harstad.

III CONGRESO INTERNACIONAL ARTE Y ENTORNO

Knut Eirik and Kjerstin are giving the opening Lecture at the 3rd International Conference on Art and Environment at the Art and Environment Research Centre (CIAE), Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) 16th of November.

“We understand that a society is projected towards the future in accordance with its own traditions, yet there is strong confrontation with the new realities that value the citizen, the environment or sustainability. That is why this conference which focuses its attention on environments in certain environments of the Nordic Council (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway or Iceland). The capitals of these countries are world leaders in terms of environmental culture. Committed to a set of values, they are examples of societies facing the challenges that lie ahead and can provide us with interesting strategies stemming from their proven experience.”

Perhaps the label that best defines him is editor as his thoughts and energies are directed toward thinking processes: the challenge of registering, synthesising, coordinating and communicating fragments of discourse.  Boke Bazán (Valencia) Senior Lecturer in the Master’s Programme in Design and Illustration at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Valencia, (UPV) and in Master’s Programme in Design Engineering at Valencia’s ESET school (Universidad CEU).Peret; Pedro Torrent (Barcelona): He works in graphic design, illustration, photography, sculpture and stage design. He has held 16 individual exhibitions (Spain, France, Japan, and México) and about one hundred collective ones in 24 countries. Luis Eslava Studio (Valencia) Luis Eslava and Lorena Sauras “gear their studio towards the creation of global projects, product design and spatial design.”

Award winner for best Nordic urban plan

Nunarsuup qeqqani - Nuup qeqqani won the best Nordic urban plan award at the Nordic architecture festival – Arkitekturmässan, in Gothenburg.

”The jury commended the clear and strong narrative that resulted from an intense research and exchange with the local community. The plan comprises a contemporary approach to landscape and cultural issues. This is a convincing project that pushes the boundaries between many disciplines and is not afraid to touch on the hard social ambiguities and the adverse local conditions. It subtly deals with different typologies and introduces urban qualities by creating diversity and a balanced density.”

Project credits: Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq has in collaboration with The Government of Greenland prepared a comprehensive master plan for the Tuujuk and Block P areas in Nuuk. The masterplan NUNARSUUP QEQQANi / / Nuup QEQQANi / In the Middle of the World / / In the Middle of Nuuk has been developed after advice from Dahl & Uhre architects, (Tromsø) and tnt nuuk a/s. Project leader for the municipality: Jakob Bjerg Exner, project team leader: Knut Eirik Dahl. Additional assistance on master plan by MDH Architects (Oslo) and Asplan Viak landscape (Oslo). Energy advise by Steinsvik Arkitekter AS (Tromsø) and INUPLAN A/S (Nuuk). Additional guest projects that have contributed significantly to the project’s development have been provided by Fantastic Norway (Oslo), MDH Architects sa (Oslo), 42 architects + Regional associates (London) and tnt nuuk a/s, M: ARC ApS and Arkitekti ApS (Nuuk).
The plan has been developed in continuous dialogue with citizens and interest groups in Nuuk and with a broad specter of Nordic voices (the Tromsø Conversations).
